Filed in: Apple, Software Add comments
Macworld has posted an in-depth review which compares 4 free web browser products and 1 commercial web browser or Mac OS X.
Leading the pack in the results is Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6 with 4.5 out of 5. Omni Group’s US$30 OmbiWeb 5.1.1 ties in 2nd place with Apple’s own bundled browser Safari 2.0 at 4 out of 5. Opera 8.0.2 which has recently been re-licensed from a commercial product to free software gets 3.5 out of 5 and Camino (also based on Mozilla) gets 3 out of 5.

Firefox includes a lot of XUL (XML User Interface Language) code which is like Java in that it runs on everything but doesn’t run *well* on anything. That’s why even though it’s a nice browser, it lags behind other browsers in performance, even on a mac. If you want or need a Gecko-based browser, Camino is a great alternative for this reason, since it is totally native in Cocoa while retaining all the great features of the Mozilla/Gecko rendering engine. Generally I use Safari as my primary browser my PowerBook, and use Camino whenever Gecko is required or preferable (i.e. updating my WordPress blog).
But still…I can’t imagine how I used to do without the RSS support in Safari. It’s just excellent.

I was sold to firefox for many year now. But it start to be quite slow, like it become tooo fat, I just need to browse the web, fast, the download manager install in it just seems to get worst and worst… anyway trying my chance with the latest camino… we’ll see how it goes..
